Maria Regina Avila - Mary's House Inspiration
Maria Regina Avila ("Mary")
In Loving Memory • 1943 – 2021
Our Inspiration & Mission

Founded in Loving Memory of Maria Regina Avila

Mary’s House was founded in memory of Maria Regina Avila, a Cuban immigrant who fled communist Cuba and dedicated half of her life in the United States to helping others by giving advice in her acclaimed syndicated column distributed throughout the U.S. and Latin America.

She would later battle eight years of Alzheimer’s disease before passing away in July 2021 at the age of 78. Her journey taught our family firsthand the profound value of patient, dignified, and loving residential care.

Our mission at Mary’s House is to offer seniors who can no longer care for themselves a safe, secure, and nurturing environment that is parallel to the devoted care received in a loving family home.

"We provide an exceptional assisted living care experience through a dedicated and compassionate team & enriched services that promote dignity, choice, and loving support."

Everything You Need To Know

Clear, honest answers to help your family make the best care decision.

How is Mary’s House ALF different from other assisted living facilities?
Mary's House is a boutique residential assisted living home capped at just 6 residents (5 private suites and 1 semi-private suite). Unlike large 100+ bed institutional facilities where seniors can get lost in the crowd, with two caregivers for six residents, our caregivers know every resident personally—their life stories, daily routines, and favorite meals. We offer a true family-oriented social home, not a commercial facility.
What is included in the monthly fee?
Starting at $3,500 a month, residents at Mary's House ALF receive all accommodations for worry-free living:
  • 5 private suites & 1 semi-private suite accommodations
  • 3 chef-prepared, home-cooked meals daily plus wholesome snacks
  • Personal care assistance with dressing, bathing, eating, grooming, and activities of daily living (ADLs)
  • Daily housekeeping and personal laundry service
  • All utilities, high-speed Wi-Fi, and cable TV
  • Scheduled social activities, arts & crafts workshops, movie nights, and games
  • At least two caregivers in the home at all times, day and night
Is someone awake overnight?
Our caregivers live in the home and are here every night. They sleep in the home and get up when a resident needs help, but we do not have a caregiver awake and watching through the night. If your loved one needs someone awake overnight, ask us about one-on-one overnight supervision, which can be arranged for an added fee, or your family may bring in its own private caregiver.
How can families pay?
We accept private pay and long-term care coverage, including long-term care insurance and Medicaid long-term care plans. Medicare does not pay for assisted living. Our team will help your family with the paperwork.
What is the visitation policy at Mary's House?
Mary's House ALF actively promotes resident visitation. In compliance with Florida Statutes Chapter 408.823:
  • Visiting hours are from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM daily at a minimum.
  • Residents may designate an essential caregiver who is guaranteed in-person visitation for at least 2 hours daily.
  • Consensual physical contact between residents and their loved ones is never restricted.
  • No proof of vaccination is required to visit.

What is assisted living and when is the right time to transition?
Assisted living is a great housing choice for seniors who are no longer capable of living alone, but want to maintain a social and active lifestyle. Residents are generally active, but may need support with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as bathing, dressing, using the toilet, eating, and assistance with medications. If you notice signs of isolation, forgotten meals, or difficulty with mobility, boutique residential care provides the ideal balance of independence and safety.
How is assisted living different from a nursing home?
The biggest differences between these two senior living options are the assistive or medical services provided and living arrangements. In contrast to assisted living, residents in a nursing home require around-the-clock skilled nursing care and intensive medical monitoring. Residents in our boutique assisted living home receive custodial care, personalized daily assistance, and a warm family atmosphere.
What is the difference between assisted living and in-home care?
In-home care is when a caregiver is hired to come into a senior's private residence. While it allows seniors to stay at home, it does not include complete housekeeping, home maintenance, or continuous meal preparation. Most importantly, in-home care carries a significant risk of social isolation, which can contribute to depression or a decline in health. At Mary's House, residents enjoy continuous companionship, group activities, and a vibrant family setting.
Are you licensed by the State of Florida?
Yes. Mary's House ALF is officially licensed and inspected by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) under License #13628, meeting all state regulatory standards for health, safety, fire inspection, and resident care.
