How to choose assisted living in Miami: questions to ask
Choosing assisted living for a parent is a big decision, and most families have never done it before. These are the questions we would ask if it were our own mother.
Check the license first
Every assisted living facility in Florida must be licensed by AHCA. You can look up any facility, its license and its inspection reports on FloridaHealthFinder.gov. Mary's House is License #13628.
Questions to ask on your visit
- How many residents live here, and how many caregivers are on each shift?
- Who helps with medications, and how are they trained?
- What happens at night if my mom needs help?
- Can I visit any day, and what are the hours?
- What is included in the monthly rate, and what costs extra?
- What happens if her needs change?
- Does anyone here speak Spanish?
Big building or small home?
Large ALFs often have more activities and amenities. Small homes have fewer people, a quieter day, and caregivers who see the same few residents every shift. Neither is right for everyone. Visit both kinds, and watch how the caregivers talk to the residents.
Visit more than once
Come at mealtime. Come in the evening. A good home looks the same at 6 p.m. as it does during the tour.
More guides: ALF vs nursing home and what Form 1823 is. Families near us come from Cutler Bay, Palmetto Bay, Pinecrest, Homestead and Kendall.
